The story behind the name
Pazi, I've been parroting the ugly-eared slander for a while now. I stand corrected! This was a great post.
It's crazy how far that myth has spread. I think there's a few Colobus monkeys out there who'd take issue with that translation, too!
I’ve read that they’re also called “dromba” in parts of the Tibet which I find to sound quite funny. Great newsletter please keep it up!!
Dromba? That's interesting, great name for these little steppe tricksters. Huge thanks for all the support, it means a lot!
Not "ененая" but "степная" which means steppe - steppe cat
Probably local people said that this is a steppe cat as it lives in steppes. But in Russia and earlier manul is used everywhere (as well as other local names - rarely)
Thank you for your valuable insights! That Russian is very hard to read in the scan :)
I was trying to find some examples of earlier use of the name in Russian, but didn't have time to dig that deep. Maybe next time!
